Deuce Eclipse of Oakland hip-hop crew Zion I will be performing at a show on the California State University - East Bay campus on November 13. I'm pretty hyped about this, since I haven't really been to a good hip-hop show since I've been in California (that Kool Keith show in SF was alright). Along with the campus, the show is being promoted by East Bay Express, an area alternative weekly newspaper, and Amnesty International.

Eminem's Slaughterhouse

Either peacefully or through violence, grudges always resolve themselves. It looks the grudge between friends Royce da 5'9 and Eminem, which arose when requests by Royce to be signed to Shady Records were rebuffed during the period when Eminem was promoting 50 Cent. Royce is now part of the back-to-basics hip hop crew Slaughterhouse and rumor has it that they're in talks to sign to Eminem's Shady Records label.

While Eminem seems to be very hit or miss in his ability to make songs, there is absolutely no doubting his lyrical ability. He has probably the most raw talent of anyone in hip-hop. Hip-hop group albums often work as an outlet for all the members of a group to showcase their ability. If he were to be a significant part of Slaughterhouse's next record, he would likely shine in that environment.

The Roots Are Back! (Again)

While listening to NPR's All Songs Considered, they profiled a new album by the Roots. The album, put out only a little over a year after 2008's Rising Down, has been described as "gospel" by those who have heard it, according to drummer ?uestlove.

One song, "How I Got Over," has been released and is available to hear at okayplayer.com. The download link has been taken down however. The Roots have always been fantastic performers, but they seem to really be shaping together a good studio sound with their last two albums. I hope "How I Got Over" is a sign of more to come.

50 Cent's Advice Is Valuable

Writer Simon Vozick-Levinson of Entertainment Weekly is ridiculous:

The idea of rapper 50 Cent branching out into motivational philosophy writing is silly enough on its own. Given how 50’s music career has been going lately, I’m not sure anybody should be taking advice from him. Still, that’s not what made me laugh when I saw The 50th Law, the upcoming book that 50 co-wrote with The 48 Laws of Power author Robert Greene. (No word on what happened to the 49th law.)
No, the reason I LOL’d was The 50th Law’s completely ridiculous packaging. HarperStudio has spent Lord knows how much money to make The 50th Law look like some kind of kitschy Bible: faux-leather cover, gold-leaf edging on the pages, built-in satiny bookmark. Who are they kidding? As a mass-market paperback — or better yet, a pamphlet — maybe I could take 50’s dispensed wisdom seriously. Presented this way, as some sort of luxury heirloom text, I’m afraid this book is simply a joke.

Then again, this does suggest a possible marketing plan for The 50th Law, out Sept. 8: Perhaps if HarperStudio has copies placed strategically in hotel-room desk drawers across the nation, a few unsuspecting travelers might mistake it for a Gideon’s Bible and read it that way, by accident. But you tell me. Am I judging this book too harshly by its cover?

Yes, Simon, you are. I'm not sure what the politics of 50 Cent's album push-back are, but I think advice from a guy who went from being a bullet-riddled crack dealer to co-owner of VitaminWater, included in the Forbes list and having a net worth of $1 million is not something to be dismissive of.

I've just seen the trailer for Chris Rock's new documentary, "Good Hair." Rock was inspired to film this documentary after his young daughter asked why she didn't have good hair. Chris interviews a variety of celebrities, regular people, men and women about an issue that continues to divide African Americans. The trailer looks like a lighthearted, comical, yet seriously enlightening look into the struggles of Black women and perceptions of beauty.

Recently, I have made the decision to stop getting weaves and started a little experiment to observe the reactions of my peers to my new natural hair style. You can read about that here. Long story short, the reactions were a bit disappointing as I thought most of my friends would be more supportive. So, I can understand why so many black women opt for long, straight silky hair, spending thousands of dollars from thousands of beauty supply stores scattered throughout this country.
At the same time, it is saddening.

On the bright side, I also found a site called Le Coil, a tumblr site featuring snapshots of beautiful Black and mixed-raced women with natural hair. It is an inspiring, alternative look at what many Black women (as well as society) define as beautiful.

The Black Olympics

So a couple football players have gotten some flack for being "insensitive" after eating fried chicken on camera in what they called the "Black Olympics:"

Uh oh, media columnists are trying to make trouble over race when there really isn’t any controversy to be had. Martellus Bennett, a Dallas Cowboy tight end is catching flack for a youtube video titled “Black Olympics. In it, he and his brother Michael, a rooke for the Seattle Seahawks compete in eating fried chicken, watermelon and drinking Kool-Aid. (video below)

Bennett said: “Me and all my brothers were in the kitchen and as I looked around, I noticed we were eating every stereotype. We got chicken, kool aid , watermelon, we might as well do a Black Olympics. That’s what happened.”

Bennett, of course, was criticized this week for being insensitive.

Bennett also says, “I don’t really think it’s offensive. It depends on your sense of humor and how you look at things. We were just having fun and it was very funny for me and my brothers, when I look at it I just can’t stop laughing. If someone takes offense, I apologize. That wasn’t my intention. It was just us having fun. Some people like what you do and some people don’t. Always in life, anything you do, someone is going to have a different opinion than what you have.”

Now, I found the video offensive but for different reasons. The sound of two dudes speedily eating fried chickens is just offensive to the senses.

BAND ALERT: Nurses

I have been listening to this band called Nurses and they are blowing my mind! They are based out of Portland, Oregon and these lads are truly an amazing trio of psychedelic loveliness! My friend Taylor told me about them almost a year ago but I had no computer to check them out. Now that I've finally given them a listen, they have constantly been on repeat. I really enjoy their raw mixes of different genres like pop, synth, and psychedelic as I mentioned before. It also has a hint of this foresty folk sound that really makes me want to dance around a campfire! Don't worry, this is a good thing. My dancing, not so much. I can't wait to see them live because you best believe I will.

I also love John's beard (I hope that's his name, I'm pretty sure it is though). It's a really attractive beard. Like i'm seriously in love with it. I want to touch it when I see them at a show. That will be my goal.

My favorite song by Nurses is a tie between Technicolor and Gettin Angry. I honestly can't choose. I tried to, but they have both been played the same amount of time on my itunes.

Their new record "Apple's Acre" comes out August 4th and will be touring sometime soon in the fall fer shure. In the meantime, check out their myspace here

Tim Sale Hulks Out

I like the caller who said that soul music is filling in for hip-hop now that it's almost dead. It's not just cookie cutter R&B that's being brought back, but, thanks to labels like Stones Throw Records and Daptone Records, we're witnessing a rebirth of the very core of soul: big bands, loud and unadulterated love and heartbreak and even barbershop quartets:

"I think of Michael Jackson as a brilliant artist and entertainer, and all those other issues about the plastic surgery or the child molestation, they're irrelevant to me."

I agree up until child molestation. That's a serious crime, and is just about impossible to justify. It's hardly "irrelevant."

Another one bites the dust. The fact that the man died isn't the only thing that bothers me. I am bothered by the fact there isn't anyone that could come close to inheriting the throne of the King of Pop. Music is on life support thanks to Auto-tune, ringtone music and worship of non-talent (I'm looking at you Rihanna). When I heard that he died, I thought about what would happen when Prince and Madonna were gone. Or Aretha Franklin and Stevie Wonder or any of our other living legends. What will we be left with?

Transformers 2: Revenge of The Fallen (WARNING: Contains spoilers)

Last night, I went to see Transformers 2: Revenge of the Fallen in IMAX! I was so excited to see the ever so sexy Shia Labeouf reprise his role as Sam Witwicky and the epic battle of the autobots and decepticons once again. However, at the end of the film, I left the movie with an opposite reaction, disappointment.

A very quick summary of the film:

After the allspark is destroyed and Megatron is sent to the depths of the Atlantic Ocean, we realize that the battle between the autobots and decepticons has just begun. As Sam Witwicky prepares for college at Princeton University, he finds a shard of the Allspark in his room (from the jacket he wore in the first film). Once Sam touches the piece of Allspark, it shocks him and he immediately begins to see in Cybertonian (robot language). This proves to be extremely unfortunate for Sam because he is now the Decepticons main target. Sam is the source needed to find this thing called the Matrix of Leadership, which the master of the Decepticons, aptly titled the Fallen (get the title?) needs to destroy the sun and earth in order to create more energy needed to create more Decepticons.

Optimus Prime and the autobots create an alliance, called NEST, with the US military in order to maintain peace and to fight off any remaining Decepticons on earth. While the military believes that all is good and well, they soon learn that they are in for a full on battle once the evil Megatron comes back to life, revitalized by stolen shard of the Allspark! Who will win? Will it be the end of human civilization as we know it? Well, watch the movie to find out!

Okay, I wasn't expecting my short summary to be that long, but I didn't know how else to describe it. There are still many pieces of the plot missing. Honestly, I barely understood the film myself seeing as how an entirely new character and history of the Decepticons was revealed. I think that was why I was disappointed. The sequel didn't seem like a sequel but more like a extension of all the stuff that wasn't described and explained in the first film. The way the film was directed was very confusing and wasn't explained well. For a movie over 2 hours, which I assumed to be an efficient amount of time to build up the plot and create an intense, at the edge of your seat, epic experience, I ended up being let down. To me, the first movie was so much better and I had such high expectations for Michael Bay for the sequel, but I guess we can't win at everything.

No doubt this movie will be a blockbuster hit despite my opinions. I mean, I was just discussing my disappointment in the plot. The special effects, fighting scenes, and comic relief are totally worth it if that is what you're looking for. This movie was hilarious, I was dying of laughter in my seat. Megan Fox won't disappoint you either, if she is your kinda girl. I always get super excited when I hear the narration of Optimus Prime! It just gets me every single time and I get that tingly feeling! Also, there is this sweet scene where Bumblebee fights two decepticons in Egypt and it is epic indeed. Bumblebee may not be able to talk, but it's made up with his awesome fighting skills. He literally tore them apart.

So I say, watch the movie, if you please, but don't expect it to be like the first Transformers.

Luke Cage Turns Noir

Marvel Comics has been putting out a series of "Noir" titles which focus on what Marvel characters would be like if they had been created during the era of Prohibition, the Great Depression and jazz. So far the characters to get the noir treatment have been the like of Daredevil, Spider-Man and the X-Men, all well known characters. The next title is Luke Cage, one of Marvel's few black superheroes and a second tier character compared to the X-Men or Spider-Man. Here's the cover:

50 Cent Reads Comic Books

I'm generally not a huge fan of gangsta rap, but I can't resist Eminem and 50 Cent. Whenever either of them puts out anything, I have to listen to it. Now I know why, with Eminem appearing with the Punisher in comic book form and 50 using a comic book as the genesis for his latest project. They're both comic book geeks!

“I used the War Angel title for it [because] I read a comic book through Marvel Comics. The guy who created it, he’s done ‘Nightmare on Elm Street’ and illustrations I’m familiar with,” 50 told MTV News. “He created this concept: War Angel. God created these angels to create war. It’s necessary on some level. I took the concept. It’s kinda from the perspective I grew up under.”

Manga Obama

An Interview with the Iconic Artist Tim Sale

Tim Sale is one of the best, if not the best, comic book artists in America today. His work blends the cartoonish with the nostalgic in a manner that revitalizes and refreshes all of the characters that he depicts. He is best known for Superman for All Seasons, Daredevil: Yellow and his work on the television show Heroes.

Tim, who grew up in the same neighborhood I did decades before me, was generous enough to answer a few questions for me. Here goes:

Seattle is in the upper left corner of the US, often forgotten by the rest of the country. How did you manage to go from there to the forefront of the comic book industry?

A little thing called talent, my friend! That and a whole ton of luck and good friends in the industry and being nice and being reliable, yeah, that too. It's never just one thing. I was also fortunate to begin in the age of FedEx, which changed the industry in ways similar to what the internet has done -- you don't have to be geographically close to where a book is published anymore.

Of all the projects you've been involved in, which is your favorite?

Not a fair question, but the first thing that comes to mind is a story, not a project. It's called, "Sam's Story" and it appeared in Superman Batman #26 as a back-up. It is about Jeph Loeb writing about the tragic death of his teen-age boy, Sam, and it will make any human weep, without a doubt.

Who were your primary artistic influences?

Alex Toth, John Buscema, Jack Kirby, Ruben Pellejero, Jack Davis, Norman Rockwell.

How did you get involved with the Heroes TV show?

Through Jeph Loeb. Jeph had a long-standing relationship with ethe series creator, Tim Kring, and when Tim wa slooking for an artist, Jeph suggested me.

Your career has allowed you to illustrate the most famous icons in comic books. Is there any project that you wish you could have done or would you like to do?

I am feeling very satisfied with my icon career. I am interested in working more with Jeph, and on working on my creator-owned project, The Killing Floor.

What do you think it is an important element in creating a great comic book?

The biggest thing is the ability of the writer and artist to play off of each other strengths, and to stay away from the weaknesses, or the aspects that one or the other does not enjoy. I believe that more and more all the time.

Has the upsurge in attention towards comic books in recent years affected your career? If so, how so?

Not that I know of. Maybe, but it is unclear.

What are you currently working on?

Captain America: White, and my own project, The Killing Floor.

Where do you see your career five or ten years from now?

Working on The Killing Floor, and also whatever other smaller projects that seem like fun, if I am fortunate enough to be offered work.

The Sea and Cake - Weekend

The Sea and Cake is a band that has apparently been around for over a decade, though their contemporary sound would make you think they were completely fresh. "Weekend" is the first and only song I've heard by them, and I love it so much that I'm a little bit afraid to see what else they've put out lest it greatly disappoint. The vocals remind me of the looming vocals of M83, while the tweaked acoustic guitar and buzzing keyboards remind me of Orbital.

The video for the song depicts carefree children doing what carefree children often do, and it's in many ways a very different video than what I imagined mentally when I first listened to the song. That's not to say that it's not fitting, but it may be wise to listen to the song without the video first in order to create your own mental image of it.

The Taking of Pelham 123

Last night or the night before that, I went to see The Taking of Pelham 123 starring John Travolta and Denzel Washington. On the ride to the movie theater I thought, "What a great combination, two amazing actors with such wonderful range." Well guess what, I was right. Pelham 123 was a great action film that kept me on the edge of my seat.

I'll give you a horrible summary of what went down:

In this 1974 remake, John Travolta plays the role of Ryder, a New York ex convict who holds a New York subway train hostage for a $10,000,000 ransom. Dezel Washington plays the naive role of Walter Garber, a MTA dispatcher who unfortunately gets caught up in the situation, becoming the only hope to keep the hostages alive and bring Ryder the ransom money in a one hour time frame.

I can't tell you the ending because you have to watch the movie to find out, duh.

John Travolta's character, Ryder, will have you laughing this entire film. Seriously, he lightens up the mood and makes it easier to breathe throughout the movie. Denzel does it yet again as the guy who saves the day, except he puts his own personal touch to it which makes it so much better. I will never have anything bad to say about Denzel Washington. Never.

So if you like action movies with a tiny touch of comedy, then you will see The Taking of Pelhamm 123. I haven't seen the original version of the film, but I would recommend it anyway.

M83 Meets The Great Dictator

Bay Area Music: Where Are You?

Something peculiar has struck me since moving to the Bay Area. It seems that the music taste in this part of America is way more polarized than any other regions like Atlanta or Seattle. Almost no educated or grown up people I met listen to hip-hop, and there's actually alot of antipathy towards the genre.

I'm not an expert on the Bay by any means, so I don't know why things are so polarized here. In Seattle it was very common to hear people say "everything" when you asked them what sort of music they listened to. Friends of mine in Advanced Placement courses and who were at top tier schools would be enthusiastic about underground hip-hop artists like Atmosphere or Seattle's own Blue Scholars.

I think it might be a mix of two factors: hip-hop has at least been percieved to be on the decline (though many artists are putting out good work) and the Bay Area has some really bad hip-hop. Seriously. E-40? Too Short? Alot of the "hyphy" stuff around here fits the worst stereotypes of rap: ignorant, stupid, degrading, lacking in skill or originality and extremely repetitive. Sure, there are some original groups like Zion I and Unified School District, but they're not being played on 104.9. Whereas Seattle has Blue Scholars and Atlanta has Outkast, the Bay doesn't really have much hip-hop to be proud of.

It'd be nice to see the Bay Area put out some good music. The Bay Area is where Sly and the Family Stone was given birth. The region needs to step up.

Where Art Thou, Happy Music?

Sometimes I wonder if I'm destined to be perpetually melancholy. Hoping to add some happy music to my depressing mix of electro, rock and hip-hop, I took to the upbound "Action/Reaction" by Choir of Young Believers. I should have known better than to think that I would be listening to music that could also be uplifting. Just read these lyrics:

"Why do black people hate white music?"

Hip-hop magazines and blogs (of the mainstream variety, at least) tend to be disappointing in their thought processes, but this is a little too much:

First of all, the title of this post is a misnomer. As I mentioned on this site a few weeks ago, black people like plenty of white music - just not very good white music. For example, if it wasn’t for black people’s inexplicable fascination with Spandau Ballet’s “True” going on 25 years after the fact, R&B singer Lloyd would almost certainly be working at a UPS or something.[1]

But it’s true in general that black people are much less into white music than white people are into black music. For example, while it’s not uncommon to find black people who listen to nothing but black music, the idea of a cracka-ass cracka who listens to nothing but cracka-ass cracka music is essentally unheard of at this point. Even crackety-cracks who live out in the sticks and like country music have been known to blast Fiddy Cent from their pickup trucks.

Maybe in high school this is true, since teenagers tend to subscribe pretty thoroughly to whatever image popular culture provides for them. I live in a pretty heavily black part of America, however, and a great deal of the black people I know don't even listen to hip-hop anymore.

I probably should have expected this for reading XXL. The last time I did that I found a letters column in which the majority of letters were written by people doing time.

The Deerfield Informant

I'm not sure how I discovered it, but I recently found the demented comic strip The Deerfield Informant, which is about two cranky old men who have been fighting amongst one another viraciously. It's quite ridiculous and seems like a lovechild between the Coen Brothers and Clint Eastwood. I hope you enjoy as much as I did.

What on earth is going on in this video? Someone will have to explain it to me because I am certainly perplexed. It's like a cookie cutter rap video with a small dose of the bizarre added in for flavor.

"So Damn Down" is one of my favorite tracks off of Brooklynati. The production is flawless, and Von Pea's verses are memorable and sharp. Von Pea certainly seems like the best rapper of the bunch and the one most likely to have his own solo career in the future.

Throwback: Gary Numan - I Die You Die

Chances are you've never heard Gary Numan aside from his played out 80s hit "Cars." Gary Numan was heralded as the new David Bowie when he arose in 1979, but eventually faded into obscurity by the late 1980s, only to come back in the late 1990s as a goth/industrial force to be reckoned with. He eventually climbed back onto the charts with the 2003 song "Crazier." (His crowning achievements of the goth period are the albums Exile and Hybrid. I love Exile so much that the cover design is actually tattooed on my right arm.)

I first found out about Gary Numan when an older friend of mine played him for me during my teenage years. I was instantly converted to a Numanoid. Numan's career is so massive and sprawling that I continue to find songs and remixes from him that I haven't heard before. The 1980 song "I Die You Die" is one example of a Numan song I have only recently discovered. Hopefully it will make you a fan as well.

Well, thanks to the wonders of Youtube I found a video of a the Temps performing today's song, Beauty Is Only Skin Deep. Sadly, the embed fuction is disabled so click here to see it. This song is my favorite out of the group's songs but the difference between this song and their other songs is that I wouldn't want to be serenaded with this song. That may sound crazy to people that don't really pay attention to the song but if you break it down and actually listen to it, you wouldn't want it sung to you either.

The premise of the song is that the protagonist basically had his heart broken by a fine girl and he found love with a not as aesthetically pleasing girl. The moral of the story is that love, not beauty is the only thing that matters. Beautiful right? It is until it gets to this part:

You're A Jerk?

As always, my curiosity got the best of me when I found out about this "Jerkin" phenomenon. A popular dance founded in my hometown Los Angeles, California, "Jerkin" is supposedly the new craze.

So what exactly is "Jerkin"? I'm pretty sure you know more than I do, I only found out what it was in detail 24 hours ago. So instead of trying to put it in my own words and ruin the fad entirely, I will give you the definition I stole from the ever so reliable urbandictionary.com:

Jerkin is an urban dance style for the youth,jerkin involves minor footwork, extreme bending at the knees. You can do it on the car or sitting on the bench.

1. An urban dance style originally started in Cali that became a nation wide phenomena over night.Crews name themselves after pop culture references and frequently call each other out over Youtube videos.

One can wear anything when jerkin. Some crews prefer skinny jeans and brightly colored clothing.It is predominatly a male dance- though some females have been known to jerk.

During the videos, one can see a large amount of wherever the jerkers are as they seem to dance any and everywhere which has added to jerkins overall appeal.

Special jerkin music is used but you can jerk to anything if you want.

Garnering attention across the nation by hip-hop duo, New Boyz and their popular song "You're A Jerk", it seems to me that this is only the beginning of this "Jerkin" style of dance. You can check out their video above.

Being the "jerk" that I am, I must state my opinion on this new trend. If you haven't seen it on my facebook status, I am not feelin it. Maybe I am jealous because I can't dance and if I do it, I'll fall on my ass but other than that, I honestly believe that by the end of the year, it will be replaced by yet another stupid dance.

And what is with all of these hip-hop dances with negative titles? We go dumb/stupid/retarded and now it's okay to be called a jerk? Hopefully the next dancing trend can be called something more positive like "I'm going smart!" or "I'm doing the college bound!" Okay, I am just being silly here, but these dances just seem to get worse. I mean, I'll admit, I will go dumb/stupid every now and then and I hate to admit that I did "Crank dat soulja boy" nonsense, but I just don't know how much I can take.

I will say though, that most kids find it fun to Jerk and battle one another, doing the Reject and Dipping, a few moves associated with "Jerkin", so it seems to have a positive effect within the hip-hop community. Which is fine by me, I guess. It has also created a new fashion trend within the black hip-hop community that has many young males wearing bright neon colors and skinny jeans. I suppose we are over (LA kids at least) the baggy clothes and have decided to try something even more uncomfortable than before. I mean, how can you jerk in such tight jeans? No rips or tears in your checkered neon green skinnies? Whatever, maybe that fashion trend is here to stay as well.

The Goode Family

Reviewer Gabe Delahaye has some harsh words for Mike Judge's new comedy The Goode Family:

Perfect, a sweatshop joke is already a winner, always, but when it's used in conjunction with a character's status anxiety, with the implication being that the sole reason for doing any of the environmentally conscious or culturally engaged behaviors and activities that the Goode Family do throughout the episode is really just a desperate attempt to win some kind of popularity contest. Nice. I know this is supposed to be humorous, and that in comedy exaggeration is key, but come on. For one, no one actually gives a shit what bag anyone's carrying (An Inconvenient Bag joke? Seriously?) and second of all, since I suppose I belong in some part to the community being mocked, I'm capable of pointing out that reusable bags never cost anything near $10. They're affordably priced as an encouragement to consumers to use them. And wait, am I really supposed to believe that a vegan woman who has installed solar paneling on her home and won't even drive her hybrid for fear of what it will do to the environment has never heard of reusable shopping bags? Because of course she has.

That paragraph has alot in it to dissect, so here goes.

While in Berkeley a couple months ago, I visited the Elephant Pharmacy, a yuppified organic food mecca. For sale were reusable bags that literally said "What would Al Gore do?" That's even more ridiculous than "An Inconvenient Bag," and a true story to boot.

Goodness gracious. This is very revealing and threatens to sink Delahaye's entire review. His being offended by having his countercultural group mocked shows him to be exactly part of the group that is the target of Mike Judge. Sure, when the suburban mediocrity of Beavis and Butt-Head and King of the Hill was Judge's target, he was to be loved. When targeting holier-than-thou leftists, he is to be loathed.

As for who the show is made for, it's made for people like me, your average American who follows what they think is right over dogma or adherence to one ideology or subgroup. Because people like me don't fall easily into categories, Gabe Delahaye may have a hard time identifying us.

I spent most of today trying to figure out what today's throwback would be. As you can see, it's almost 10:30 at night and as I was scrolling through my iPod I came across Beyonce's version of one of Etta James's songs. So, Etta it is. I have had this song on constant repeat even though I'm kinda happy with my love live right now. I like this song because it actually conveys emotion. I actually believe that she's going through a breakup and her love is marrying another woman. I don't get that vibe from alot of love songs today. I don't believe that Ne-yo is actually going to bed mad at someone. Today's music is just fake. Plain and simple. Now, without further ado...

I apologize for my lack of posts, but hopefully I can make it up by writing an awesome review of Pixar's latest animated film simply titled, "Up".

The wonderful film follows Carl Fredricksen, an old bitter man who goes on an unlikely adventure in his home to fulfill a promise made to the love of his life. Complications ensue once Russell, a Wilderness Explorer, accidentally finds his way into Carl's home and heart. Carl and Russell's adventure in the flying house begins to go down south once they get entangled in some dangerous encounters. I don't want to spoil it for you all, but this journey is one that you won't forget!

As usual, the Disney/Pixar movie tugs at your heartstrings and totally brought tears to my eyes. Aimed at both children and adults, "Up" is another prized film that I hope will bring home another Oscar for Best Animated Film. With the underlying message that we are all to create our own adventures with the ones we love, it is something that I hope to incorporate into my personal life. With such amazing reviews by both critics and fans, you know that your $9.00 will be well spent.

Little known facts about my voyage to see this movie:

Went to two movie theaters before only to be rejected by the SOLD OUT sign.

Hoped to see it in 3D, but The Bridge wanted to charge us a whopping $15.75! They got me messed up cuz I was not gonna pay 16 bucks for an hour and a half movie!

Finally went to Marina Del Rey to see it in a smaller, much cheaper movie theater called United Artists. They were very hospitable and gave me a student discount.

The Pixar short, Partly Cloudy was one of the best I have seen.

Oh yeah, I cried about five times.

I started the clapping at the closing credits and everyone followed suit. It was PERFECT!

New Series: Throwback of the Day

Hey kiddies, Ash is here. My partna Aneesah came up with the lovely idea of having ongoing columns for WYP. So, I decided to do a test run with "Throwback of the Day". Basically, I will post a video of a song from the 90s, 80s, 70s, 60s and beyond and write about it. I know I haven't been posting like I should so what better way to start than with a daily column?

So here goes....this one is for my hip-hop heads.
The Fugees, Killing Me Softly, The Score, 1996

I miss the Fugees. I miss Lauryn. Plain and simple.
This may sound a tad dramatic but it seems like another piece of music died when Lauryn and the Fugees disappeared. Real talent started to take a backseat to ringtone rap and "crank dat" songs. Music is going to hell in a handbasket and it's up to the listeners to save it. Whenever I have discussions about the condition of today's music, I am met with "White people control the industry" or "Kids don't know what real music is" and other dribble. While it maybe true that execs have a big influence on what music is put out, the labels still need people to buy the music in order for them to make money. People like Soulja Boi didn't get famous because of talent, they get famous because people buy CDs. If people stopped buying the bad music, maybe the execs might change their tune. Maybe more Lauryn Hills and Fugees could get a break. Introduce your friends, family, and peers to other options. Support your underground and struggling artists and stop buying bootlegs and get off Limewire (I'm guilty of this too). But for now, hit play and enjoy.

Google Wave

If you've never heard of Google Wave you will in the coming months. At Google's I/O conference developer Lars Rasmussen (also developer of Google Maps) demonstrated the Wave prototype, which is explained as equal parts document and conversation.

If you're a little confused about what that means that's fine because I was too. Understandably so it's a difficult concept to wrap your brain around because it's so radical. Basically Google Wave is a re-imagining of how we communicate online and is a hybrid of email and instant messaging. Rasmussen explains that the thought process behind Wave's development is "...what would the email be like if it were invented today?'.

This concept could definitely put, social networking site Myspace, out of its misery and put some pressure on flourishing sites like Facebook or boost micro-blogging site Twitter even further than it already is.

If you would like more details on how Google Wave actually works click here for a video of Google I/O. Some of the things that they demonstrate are truly amazing and it's not even done yet.

I always had the impression that Alan Moore was quite a bit of a recluse, to the point where appearing on camera would go against his style. Apparently not, as he shows his gruffy mug for nearly ten minutes here, giving his thoughts on his writing style and the films made of his work:

If you walk away from that video thinking that Alan Moore is a funky looking nutter, please keep in mind who he is. Moore is unquestionably, in my view, the most groundbreaking writer of his generation. He can dress and look however he wants. No one else's work even compares to his, and that cannot be said about many other writers, in comic books, non-fiction, fiction or any other field.

Hip-Hop Needs To Be Redefined

Back in 1999, The Matrix came out in theaters, providing a soundtrack far superior to the overrated cookie cutter science fiction of the film. The soundtrack introduced me to one of my favorite bands of all time, Rammstein, as well as "Rock is Dead," the only song by Marilyn Manson I could stand to listen to.

Even though I was really just a pre-teen around that time, I frequented indie record stores and read music magazines. It was pretty well established among rock enthusiasts at that point that rock was dead. Everyone was pretending to like hip-hop and the biggest rock acts were the like of Linkin Park or Limp Bizkit, which blended rapping with simple metal riffs. It wasn't until the White Stripes blew up that rock music seemed to really take off again.

It really feels like hip-hop is in the same position right now that rock was a decade ago. The genre is in need of new energy, a new direction and new personalities. Even the pretty good acts, like indie Californian rappers U-N-I or the fairly stellar releases like veterans like Nas, Jay-Z and Eminem, seem to be missing a certain something that was there in the first Dr. Octagon or Nas' Illmatic.

Rap seems to know this too. The fantastic new release Brooklynati by Ohio group Tanya Morgan has a song called "She's Gone," another take on the cliche depiction of hip-hop as a woman that has done her lovers wrong. While it's cliched, the metaphor works. I fell head over heels in love with hip-hop as a teenager, spending nearly all my time with her, writing about her and defending her against the ridicule hurled by friends and family.

In the mainstream mind, hip-hop has a well deserved bad reputation. From the tragic East Coast/West Coast beefs all the way to 50 Cent's violent, nihilist rants, the impression of most music fans seems to be of hip-hop as a genre that is neck deep in violence for violence's sake and sex for sex's sake. People like myself that know better from having listened to the brilliance of Kool Keith, Mos Def, Nas or Grayskul have an uphill battle to present the better hip-hop.

This leads me to a proposition. Up and coming acts like U-N-I, Tanya Morgan, Onra, Zion I or The Gigantics should just scrap the "hip-hop" label and go for something else that squarely describes their music. Alot of electronic artists don't call themselves such in order to avoid the "techno" label, and it would be wise for intelligent linguists in underground hip-hop to follow suit. How about using "future funk," the phrase mega-producer Onra uses on his new song "My Comet?"

Donald Duck, Hero of the Proletariat

Every once in a while I read something that is just bizarre. This is the case with an article in today's Wall Street Journal, in which writer Susan Bernofsky documents the huge popularity of Donald Duck in Germany.

The article comes with the unsurprising, as German parents apparently met comic books with the same hostility as parents in the United States:

The initial response to the Donald Duck comics in Germany was mixed. German kids loved them; German parents worried that this “trash literature” would interfere with children’s development. Of the 300,000 copies of the magazine Micky Maus printed in 1951, only 135,000 sold. But just six years later, the monthly journal had been replaced by a weekly, which by the late 1960s was appearing in an edition of 450,000 copies.

However, the article also documents the bizarre:

Not only young kids were reading it. Micky Maus became popular entertainment among a newly politicized generation who saw the comics as illustrations of the classic Marxist class struggle. A nationally distributed newsletter put out by left-leaning high school students in 1969 described Dagobert (Scrooge) as the “prototype of the monocapitalist,” Donald as a member of the proletariat, and Tick, Trick and Track as “socialist youth” well on their way to becoming “proper Communists.” Even Frankfurt School philosopher Max Horkheimer admitted to enjoying reading Donald Duck comics before bed.

Donald Duck as hero of the proletariat? I suppose that makes sense. After all, Scrooge McDuck is certainly the ultimate example of bourgeois decadence:

Okay so I am really late with this, it came out last November but I just discovered this and I want you guys to take a listen! Born Ruffians is probably my favorite band out there right now. This trio of hootin and hollerin Canadians just make my day. If you have not heard their latest studio album, Red, Yellow, and Blue, then you need to! This funky folk band has got all the right melodies to make me get out of my seat and dance, which is what I do best!

Anyway, check out their appearance on Daytrotter Session! They have three new songs out that are just absolutely amazing. my favorite is Sole Brother. Singer/guitarist, Luke LaLonde, discusses how he used to help his grandfather rake leaves and do chores around his house. He becomes jealous of his sister who never gets to do chores and begins to wish how he was an only child.

I know I have an older brother who can definitely relate to this song. It's cute, catchy, and most of all it's free! SO GO DOWNLOAD IT NOW!

Artists Come Out for UCR's Spring Splash

On May 2nd, UCR’s program board, ASPB, hosted Spring Splash, an outdoor music festival featuring Common, Wale, and Ben Lee on the main stage and J*Davey, the Skeletones, Fake Problems and many more on the side stage. The event was one of the biggest events at UCR that embraced the “Green Movement” with attractions such as the Sustainable Living Roadshow, the Beer Garden (that served organic beer), a white dome that held workshops on how to be more eco-friendly and other green-related activities.

The boyfriend and I explored the area. We stopped at the side stage for the Skeletones’ super chill set that brought out the ska-loving punks.

I wish I would have gotten a shot of Paul Hampton’s key-tar. After their set, I had a strong desire to own one. Just for visual stimulation: Boom!, amirite? I think that warranted a “boom.”
Next up was D.C. rapper Wale (and someone's wallet), whose popularity is increasing by the minute.

He performed most of his popular hits including Nike Boots, WALEDANCE, “Chillin’” featuring Lady Gaga (the video for “Chillin’” will be released soon, btw) and others. Wale caused a ruckus (I speak like an old person), jumping off the stage and performing crowd level. He ran signing nearly every person’s poster who stood in the first row. See? I think it says "Wulyg." Wale’s presence was definitely known at UCR.
We ventured to the side stage again for the last-minute J*Davey set.

I wouldn’t have known that the electro-funk duo were performing had I not checked my myspace first. So, it was a pleasant surprise that they showed up due to some line-up switches. Unfortunately, the crowd didn’t share my sentiments. It was a sad sight to see Jack Davey belting out songs to a dead crowd especially since the response was much more lively when the band performed just a few months earlier. Jack decided to jump off the stage and breathe life into the audience.
I’m pretty sure this guy was excited.

Finally who we were all waiting for, Common dominated the main stage performing most of his hits including the sexy “Go,” “I Used to Love H.E.R.” and “Come Close,” bringing a lucky fan on stage with him to sing to. Common was accompanied with background vocals by Muhsinah--who everyone needs to check out, like now--and took us back by covering a few old school hits including the Pharcyde’s “Passin’ Me By” and “Nuthin’ But a G Thang.” He then began an amazing freestyle, mentioning a number of areas on and off campus, letting us know he did his research. As if the crowd wasn’t hyped enough, he launched into “Universal Mind Control” and the crowd went crazy. I lost him when he jumped off stage and signed autographs so this is a perfect moment to mention Erich Chen’s photography.

He has awesome shots of the event here. As opposed to my feeble Fujifilm failed attempts. Overall, the show was great and ASPB keeps its reputation as a kickass program board. That‘ll do, ASPB. That'll do.

Redneck Violence

R&B songstress, Chrisette Michele, returns with her sophmore album “Epiphany,” an album that focuses primarily on all the aspects of a relationship. Despite being featured on many songs by acclaimed artists like Jay-Z and Nas, as well as the popular Roots’ jam, “Rising Down,” Michele is not quite a household name--at least not yet. Her first album, As I Am, only received minimal success. Michele hopes to acquire more success this time around with “Epiphany” as she leaves the majority of the songwriting and production to Ne-Yo.

Songs like the title track “Epiphany (I‘m Leaving)” exhibits Ne-Yo’s influence throughout the album. The song, with its playful, rhythmic piano melody and mid-tempt cadence has garnered popularity in the music charts. It is a catchy breakup song in which Michele is pretty much “over” the monotony of a relationship. The song is nice because of its relatable subject matter and leads a trend of songs that anyone can listen to and automatically engage in. In “Notebook,” Michele sings about not having the courage to tell her crush how she really feels, so she writes it all in her notebook. It’s cute, catchy song that anyone can identify with.

It’s obvious that Michele is trying to appeal to a larger audience, deviating from her initial jazzy vibe to a more pop/R&B tone that is easier to consume in this music industry. Despite this switch of sound, this works in her favor because if one thing hasn’t changed, it is her amazing vocal talent that is showcased throughout this entire album. She exhibits her vocal range to its fullest extent in the powerful “Blame It On Me.” Those real squeaks and gasps of emotion in the midst of stunning notes gives this song its power. One moment her voice is swinging upwards and in another moment she is singing like a bird, tackling each note with perfection. Her talent only proves her worthiness of numerous comparisons to Ella Fitzgerald.

This is an album that definitely truimphs over the “sophmore slump” and will hopefully give her the credit and attention she deserves.

I know what you're thinking, "wtf is Green Porno?!" I am, too. Apparently, the Sundance Channel thinks it's a good idea to educate people on how animals reproduce.

I guess that's cool and educational and what not, but it comes off really...weird. Host, Isabella Rossellini, acts out scenes dressed as the featured creatures and explains briefly the mating process. Maybe it's just me but you take a look at this video let me know if this doesn't make you a little uncomfortable.

This song is easily 5 stars out of 5. Hell, it should be 10 out of 5. It defies mathematics. It defies everything.

This album looks like a mixed bag. With brilliant songs like this, there's also total trash like "We Made You" and boring songs like "Old Time's Sake." Fortunately, we no longer live in the era of CDs so you can skip past the lame stuff.

Also, I really like the lack of blonde in Eminem's hair. He looks alot darker and that fits his music more.

The Cool Kids' Mikey Rocks of Chicago and partner in crime Chuck Inglish of Detroit have released their new mix tape Gone Fishing with Don Cannon, which is evident by Mr. Cannon announcing that at the beginning of every song.

Gone Fishing is similar to their previous mix tape The Bake Sale with its slow tempo and base driven beats over The Cool Kids typical nonchalant delivery. However, Gone Fishing isn't a clone of their previous works which rely heavily on synthesized beats which gave the songs a retro feel. On this record Mikey and Chuck have improved their story telling ability along with modernizing their beats. Nevermind that Mexican officials are angry that the Chinese government has quarantined over 70 Mexicans because of fear of infection like it was SARS all over again.

Hilariously bad tutorials are created to teach us the proper methods of coughing into our sleeves. And now graphic designer, Irina Blok, is cashing in now that the world is in panic-mode. She created these “limited edition” masks above for 10 bucks a pop (plus shipping and handling). Perhaps, she realized how ridiculous this was and opted to donate the money to Children International “to help Mexico fight the swine flu epidemic” to increase sales? I get it, she's making light of the situation.

I guess it isn’t as bad as Obama USB flash drives?

Honestly, guys. Just wash your hands and cover your mouths when you cough/sneeze. A little bottle of Purell wouldn’t hurt either. Done. Eminem Keeps Me Up Til 3 AM

Wow.

I heard a clip from Eminem's new song "3 AM" on iTunes and thought it was terrible. Given his previous single "We Made You," I figured this wouldn't be any better. The only reason I watched it is because I was in middle school when The Marshall Mathers LP came out and I still have a lingering interest in what he's up to.

Let me say that I'm very pleasantly surprised. This is one of the most original hip-hop videos I've seen in a long time. The song sounds nothing like anything he's done before. Horrorcore was a neat little subgenre in hip-hop a long while back but it never (to my knowledge) got explored to this degree. I can see why this wasn't the first single as it's not for everybody, but this is truly a worthy return.

Electro Re-Birth

Wolverine Gets Declawed

If there was one problem with X-Men 3 that makes it [still] very difficult to watch, it was the abundance of excess characters and plots overlapping at such a pace that they made each other irrelevant. Fortunately, that's not a problem with X-Men Origins: Wolverine.

I came into Wolverine with very low expectations. After X-Men 3, I just hoped for a coherent, linear storyline that would present the X-Men characters well. Wolverine does that for the most part, as characters such as Gambit and the Blob are done fairly well and the plot at least makes some sense. However, the classic character of Deadpool is destroyed, as criticism at iFanboy shows:

BEWARE DEADPOOL FANS:

Don't under any circumstances watch this movie. You might think it has Ryan Reynolds as Deadpool, that dude is perfect. He has a 30 second speaking role that's it.

Then the people involve with the film continue on to ass rape him.

If you're watching this for Deadpool, don't. Just don't do it. You'll thank me after the interwebs explode.

This is after Deadpool was portrayed fairly well in the straight-to-DVD animated feature Hulk VS. This once again illustrates my theory that comic book characters can be much more accurately portrayed in animation as opposed to the much more expensive but somehow more marketable live action format. The Curse of the Black Freighter seemed more genuine than Watchmen, the film it was tied to, and the recent Wonder Woman animated movie portrayed that character better than any non-comics incarnation I'd seen before. It'd be interesting if Marvel decided to market one of their animated films to theater-going audiences. I think audiences would be more open to the idea than film executives may think.

Other than the format, there's some major problems with Wolverine. One is continuity. Sabretooth is made to look absolutely nothing like the character did in X-Men back in 2000. Wolverine is also being called "James" when he's a child at the beginning of this movie, but suddenly is being called "Logan" by the time he's grown up. There's no explanation for this, even though there was in the stellar graphic novel Wolverine: Origin.

That's nitpicking, however. For a good action movie, Wolverine does a pretty good job. It's entertaining, going from the awesome (the helicopter fight scenes are great) to the funny (watch the scene in which Logan's freshly adamantium-laced claws destroy a bathroom sink). If you want a fun comic book movie, this surely delivers, but a classic it is not.

So I was going through my usual routine today (lounging around all day and rushing to clean up at around six o'clock before my mom gets home) and I peeked out of the blinds to check if her truck was outside. But what I found was far more intriguing than the top of a silver Dodge Durango. As I was surveying the street from my lair, I noticed an unfamiliar vehicle parked directly in front of my driveway. My immediate thoughts were profane, then I figured the car probably belonged to my cousin's friend and perhaps he and the passenger were waiting for my cousin to come outside. After about 5 minutes there was no sign of my cousin leaving and the car was still parked in front of my house. So I did what any bored woman would do and I stalked them. I sat, stood rather, at my window stealthily gazing at the unsuspecting couple and I imagined what they were discussing, then it happened. My heart began to race, my breath quickened, and my knees began to weaken. Is this really happening? In my neighborhood? In front of my house? It was like a scandalous scene from Desperate Housewives (I was the lonely damsel desperate for excitement). The longer I stared at the couple, the hotter the scene became. One moment they were kissing, the next her seat was back and he was on top of her, his hand in between her legs and his face buried in her breast. It was hot to say the least. I know that sounds like something a greasy old sleeze bag would say but it's true...it was hot. There were 3 elements that made the scene as steamy as it was.

1) The couple was gorgeous. The guy was hot. The girl was hot.
2) The setting was classic: a car.
3) I can't say this for sure, but I'm pretty sure they were being sneaky. (I had never seen that car in my neighborhood--they weren't waiting for anyone--and they left as soon as they were done.)

Anways, I'm not going to make this a Harloquin novel and discuss all the dirty details, but it was sexy...but you don't have to take my word for it!

Island Trouble

Apparently I misspelled Desmond's love Penny's name as Penne in the article. Someone left a funny comment pointing out my mistake:

1. Desmond isn`t engaged to a pasta, her name is Penny; not Penne ;) 2. Writing "Cusick`s behavior on set has landed him in hot water," is tantamount to reporting that he actually *did* the behavior in question, and not that he is just accused for having done it. This ought to be corrected.

Fish Lovers Everywhere Be Alarmed

Too bad in a few years that may cost you the same as Alaskan crab dish which can easily total up to $80. "Why?!" is what you may be asking yourself in shock and amazment, well I'll tell you why.

Conservationist are pushing to temporarily stop fishing 20-40 percent of the worlds oceans, and by temporarily they mean 20 years. They've brought this to the table as a solution to help stop dwindling fish populations in the oceans and reverse some of the damage that commercial fishing has done. Granted this could help replenish the world fish stocks dramatically, and is necessary so that we don't destroy our Eco-system...or just plain run out of fish to eat all together. However in the mean time the price of fish would skyrocket. This would be especially true in many Asian and island nations where fish is a staple of many diets read more at The Observer.

I'm really glad Maxwell is back. Sometimes, my mom played the smooth jazz station in the mornings and I would get that relaxed feeling listening to "Luxury: Cococure" or "Don't Ever Wonder" before I started my hectic day. I remember when he covered Kate Bush's "This Woman's Work", thinking it was one of the most beautiful songs I'd ever heard. At least, in a while.

After 8 years, he returns with his first single, "Pretty Wings" for part one of his album trilogy, "Black Summer's Night" to be released July 7th.

On Saturday, April 25th, the Academy of Art Institute in San Francisco hosted the Spring 2009 fashion show and it was breath-taking to say the least. At first I thought I was just awestruck by the flashing lights, loud music, profession models, and couture atmosphere, but the show was truly amazing. The clothes were impeccably made, the fabrics were gorgeous, the shoes were to die for and the male models...be still my heart! The day started off fairly hectic but it progressed with ease.

I picked out my ensemble the night before (I laid out about four possible outfits including accessories, and took notes on possible hairstyles and makeup looks). The day of the show I woke up at about 7am and looked surprisingly well-rested for someone who is a far cry from a morning person and managed to squeeze in only 4 hours of sleep. I went through my usual morning routine and weeded through my outfits. An hour and a floor full of shoes, scarfs, jewelry, blouses, and skirts later I stood in front of my full length mirror and gazing back at me was one "effortlessly" chic young woman. I was wearing 4 and a half inch black patent leather pumps, dark wash skinny jeans, a gray long sleeved body conscious shirt, navy blue men's blazer, gold pendant necklace, and diamonique stud earrings. My hair was pulled back in a chignon so tight I had a mini facelift and my makeup was minimal, but current (neutral face and bold brows). Everything was perfect...well not exactly. Now that I think of it my bag was totally wrong...I should have had a clutch instead of a cream colored tote, but I still looked fierce.

My friend (who worked the hell out of her fuschia blazer, black mini, graphic black and white tee, and 5 inch heels) and I dined on BLTA's before the show (we wouldn't dare be caught eating near the show!) When my guest and I arrived, we were greeted with envious stares and a couple of "I know she didn't wear that!" looks (yes, honey, I DID wear that...not only did I wear it I killed it biotch). For a minute, literally a minute, I began to think I was overdressed. Then I remembered, Um, no...it's a fashion show! So me and my gal strutted our stuff to the mandatory orientation to receive our tickets and we met up with a hot advisor by the name of Alex who gave us THIRD ROW tickets to the show. We were close enough to touch the runway (and don't think we didn't do it..a couple of times actually). I must have been in a complete trance during the show because my friend kept nudging me as each model emerged from behind the grand white curtains...as if I didn't see them! To make a long story short, I thoroughly enjoyed myself.

Chelsea Stone is suing LOST actor Henry Ian Cusick and ABC for sexual harrassment.

She also claims Cusick "placed his face on top of [her] breasts, moving his face from side to side." He then squeezed her breasts with his hands. (TMZ)

The old motorboat. Classic. Desmond is hot. Why is she complaining again? All jokes aside, sexual harrassment is wrong (obviously) and he should deal with the consequences. A somewhat amusing story from the set of the brilliant TV show Lost:

LOS ANGELES — A woman who claims she was sexually harassed then fired from the TV show "Lost" is suing ABC and actor Henry Ian Cusick.

The lawsuit filed Friday in Los Angeles alleges that Cusick, who plays Desmond Hume on the show, fondled the woman's buttocks and breasts and kissed her on the lips in October 2007. The lawsuit claims she reported the incident to her supervisor, but was simply told to avoid the actor. She states she was fired 12 days later in retaliation for reporting the alleged abuse.

The filing says the woman had worked for ABC since 1997.

Coolest Gas Station Ever!

Ok maybe it's not the coolest gas station ever, but the United Oil gas station is pretty fancy. Especially considering that it's located on the corner of Slauson Blvd. and La Brea Ave. in Los Angeles just outside of the infamously notorious city of Inglewood.

This retro-futuristic marvel is modeled after the classic gas stations of the 1950's and '60's and is reminiscent of America's--and particularly Los Angeles'--love of automobiles. This modernized structure was built entirely out of aluminum, plastic, glass and concrete and is 100% earthquake proof.

Just in case you were wondering the price of gas at this station was significantly lower than the gas stations at the other three corners of the busy intersection. United Oil is not only aesthetically pleasing but your wallet will grin with joy at the lower price of gasoline.

One of the most eloquently portrayed movies of our time, The Namesake is the heart-wrenching story of a turbulent relationship between a father and son...Ok that totally sounds like I read that straight off the box but I swear I didn't. There's a lot I could say about how great this movie is but I won't. I won't sit here and profess my love for all things Indian. I won't tell you that this move got rave reviews. I won't tell you that the guy who plays Kumar in White Castle does an exceptional job at playing a serious character trapped between his Indian heritage and his American heritage. I won't even sit here and tell you that every time I watched this movie I went through a box of Kleenex. But I will say that if you have not seen this movie, you most definitely should.

Earth Day: Get Your Green On

Today signifies the worldwide event known as Earth Day, when we have an excuse to "go green" other than the fact that we should. Recently I went shopping with a friend and the grocery store only offered paper bags, when my friend and I left the store he said to me, "Sure we're not using plastic bags but what about the trees?" This got me thinking, are some of the things we're doing really "green"?

There's a simple solution to the grocery bag problem. Buying reusable bags. I would suggest buying the not fabric materials as those can get a little funky after a while. Here is a website dedicated to bringing you more ways to go green.

Along with Earth Day in 2007, Australians initiated Earth Hour by turning off all non-essential lights from 8 pm to 9pm in each of their respective time zones. Earth Hour has since then become an international event. I plan to participate tonight and you should too, because with your powers combined, I am Captain Planet!

Japanese Cherry Blossom Festival

I know I am a newbie in the San Francisco/Bay Area and I must say that upon my miraculous journey, I have discovered many new things. Grab a raincoat during the summer because it rains, the tenderloins is not a high class steak restaurant, the BART may smell like piss but it gets you around, etc. This past weekend (and the week before), I have learned something new that I plan to attend every year- and that is the Japanese Cherry Blossom Festival!

Located in the heart of Japantown in San Francisco, the Japanese Cherry Blossom Festival is a celebration of culture and diversity in the Japanese American community. Staying true to traditional events, entertainment for the event features Taiko drumming, Japanese food bazaar, arts and crafts, martial arts, folk dancers and more! With over 200,000 people in attendance, this celebratory event brings different ethnicities and cultures together in a positive way.

I only attended two days of the four day festivity (two weekend long event) and it blew my mind! I would have to say my favorite activity was eating! I had a taste of every food item I could get my hands on! My favorite one was the Teriyaki burger hands down! For only five bucks, this delicious beef burger slathered with homemade teryaki sauce was a festival on its own... in my mouth! I also enjoyed the traditional sushi, lumpia, and spam musubi! If you plan to attend this event in the future, make sure you have cash on you because you are going to eat!

Another reason in going to the Japanese Cherry Blossom Festival was to see my good friend James perform with the SF Taiko Dojo. Words cannot explain the skill, patience, and precision that goes into Taiko drumming. The physical strength and concentration of beating these huge drums that create a thunderous, yet serene and relaxing sound is something that I commend each individual for. I was mesmerized and I highly recommend that you see these talented artists perform at least once in your lifetime. I was in tears by the end of their number and I was so proud of James and the SF Taiko Dojo team. If you want to see for yourself, then YOUTUBE IT! Seriously. It's amazing.

I also went to the parade on the last day to support James and the taiko team, but it was such a hot day that I couldn't bear to stand there or else I was going to faint. I was very sad that I missed George Takei as the Grand Marshal. I would have loved to see him since I am such a huge fan of his work as well as his contribution to the LGBT community, but I was drinking cool ice water at the food bazaar and I missed him on the float... sad story.

So in conclusion, you absolutely must attend the Japanese Cherry Blossom Festival and experience Japanese American culture at its finest. YAY!

Newbie in Town

Ok so this is my first post on this blog and I want to make it action-packed and exciting but I'm not sure I have an ounce of creativity left in my dehydrated body...so I'll do the best I can with what I can muster. It's April 21st in Northern California and it's 90 something degrees out here. Rob Roy On Star Trak?

On the momentum of his popular single and video "Fur In My Cap", Floridian rapper Rob Roy, reports via his Twitter that he has been contacted by Pharrell Williams. Front man of N*E*R*D* and The Neptunes and more importantly the CEO of Star Trak Entertainment. Star Trak Ent. is known to sign unique artist such as Rob Roy. Signing artist such as Kelis, Kenna and more recently Chester French.

Will Pharrell make Rob Roy the newest member of Star Trak? Only time will tell, but I personally think it would be a great fit on both parties involved. It would be interesting to hear Rob Roy's Andre 3000 slash Lil' Wayne hybrid rapping style over the eccentric beats of The Neptunes to say the least.

Coathangers "Stop Stomp Stompin"

I'm not sure how I've been deprived of the Coathangers (the Atlanta-based all girl punk outfit) for so long, but my world has gotten a lot cooler having watched this video and subsequently checking their myspace. Their address reads: fuckthecoathangers. Holy shit, badassery abounds. What have I been missing? This is some serious girl power (yeah, I live in the 90s. I guess.)

George Will, the Original Hipster

George Will's most recent column is actually a crusade against that quintessential American fabric: denim. I went into it thinking it would be another cranky screed by an aging commentator running out of stuff to talk about but parts of it actually make sense:

Long ago, when James Dean and Marlon Brando wore it, denim was, Akst says, "a symbol of youthful defiance." Today, Silicon Valley billionaires are rebels without causes beyond poses, wearing jeans when introducing new products. Akst's summa contra denim is grand as far as it goes, but it only scratches the surface of this blight on Americans' surfaces. Denim is the infantile uniform of a nation in which entertainment frequently features childlike adults ("Seinfeld," "Two and a Half Men") and cartoons for adults ("King of the Hill"). Seventy-five percent of American "gamers" -- people who play video games -- are older than 18 and nevertheless are allowed to vote. In their undifferentiated dress, children and their childish parents become undifferentiated audiences for juvenilized movies (the six -- so far -- "Batman" adventures and "Indiana Jones and the Credit-Default Swaps," coming soon to a cineplex near you). Denim is the clerical vestment for the priesthood of all believers in democracy's catechism of leveling -- thou shalt not dress better than society's most slovenly. To do so would be to commit the sin of lookism -- of believing that appearance matters. That heresy leads to denying the universal appropriateness of everything, and then to the elitist assertion that there is good and bad taste.

This is very true. If one were to take a look at 1930s America, when Americans were stuck in epic positions of poverty, you'll see fedoras, golf caps and US Navy pea coats:

For such poor folks, they certainly knew how to dress. (The peacoat appears to be coming back into fashion, fortunately.) Based on the evidence of George Will's personal fashion decisions, however, he may have a bit of learning to do.

Depeche Mode's Sounds Of The Universe

Depeche Mode is one of my favorite bands of all time and even though they're old as dirt they have an amazing new single for their upcoming album, Sounds of the Universe, which is scheduled to be released on April 21.

Here is the video for their single "Wrong". I actually had to watch the video twice to really understand what was going on. Hopefully you aren't as dumb as I am, and you watch the video a second time to appreciate the synth and bass driven melody of the song. Enjoy.

Review: Gary Numan - Jagged Edge

Around ten years ago, my Big Brother Matt played some Gary Numan for me. I instantly fell in love. Numan's style is simultaneously dark, transient, powerful and strange. Later learning that Numan shared very odd personal characteristics with myself, such as being generally libertarian, a religious skeptic and having Asperger's syndrome (all documented on his Wikipedia page), made me all the more of a devotee.

Between 2000 and 2006, Gary Numan only put out one album with new material: the stellar remix album Hybrid. In 2006, he put out a new album called Jagged, which was overall very disappointing. All the songs were formulaic: starting with strange industrial sounds, building into hard guitars and a chorus and then fading out. Alot of the songs had potential but needed to be reworked so that they stood out from one another.

With his remix album Jagged Edge, Numan breathes life into the mediocre 2006 album. Strange musical combinations make themselves known on this album, most notably on the song "Edge (AF)," in which samples of Islamic prayers are overtaken by distorted keyboards and science fiction sounds. The song "Slave," which has a beautiful chorus, is reworked twice here.

The remix versions of Numan's albums often turn out to be the best of his work. Like his fellow geek George Lucas, Numan is not content to release a finished product and is constantly tinkering with his art. Jagged Edge comes highly recommended, as does the remix albums Hybrid and Exile: Extended.

Time Travel: "We Are Glass"

If you were to listen to new artists like The Fascination Movement or M83, you would be right in thinking that new wave never got old. There are certainly some out there to whom synthpop is a new phenomenon, so I recommend this video of "We Are Glass" by Gary Numan as a primer in 80s music schooling.

Introducing: Con the Bassmaster

Brandon Washington is something like a superhero. He is an unpretentious shampoo vendor by day and a gruuvmastering, beatforging, head-exploder by night. Hailing from “the land without Gruuv” or otherwise known as Wisconsin, a state known more for its cheese than its epic drum and bass music, he is Con the Bassmaster, saving us from the mundane--one awesome song at a time. His groove-inducing musick is exceptional as he samples anything from Cassie (yep) to Coheed and Cambria in a seemingly effortless, almost machine-like consistency. He agreed to answer more than a few questions for us. So, here is an introduction. A tip of the iceberg, if you will, of Con the Bassmaster.

So why are you Con the Bassmaster?
I wanted a name that could leave its connotation to the consumer, but people just call me Con. I was going for the act of conning a bassmaster, you see. But Con's not too shabby of a nickname!

How's the music scene in Wisconsin?
The musick scene here is mainly punk rock and metal/hardcore. Eh.

What is it about dnb that you like?
DNB and Jungle have roots in funk and reggae, which are two of my favourite genres. I suppose it just kinda happened.

Who are your musical influences?
If I had to pick 3, it would be the RZA, Frank Zappa, and Nobuo Uematsu.

Interesting choices. Why those three specifically?
Well, the RZA because his production skills are damn near legendary. And both Zappa and Uematsu are fantastic composers (in Zappa's case, WAS a fantastic composer). They all just have great taste in sounds, and their skills in arrangement are superb. I aspire to be at 1/4 of their collective levels, ya dig?

What goes on through your head when you make music?
As for what's going on in my head when I'm beatforging, it depends. Sometimes its sadness, other times its a feeling of love and happiness. In the end, its more about drawing from what’s around me/happening to me than anything else.

What do you want people to think when they hear your music?
"That's pretty groovy."

What was the most difficult song you made and why?
The song "Matriarch." It was a song I was making for my grandma, but she passed away before it was complete. A rather sad tale.

How would you describe your style?
I would describe my style as a mix of dnb, hip hop, and trance, with a progressive feel to it. Others would describe it as video gamey. :/

What would you say was your biggest stylistic leap while making music?
Biggest leap was when I got heavy into sampling. Opens up a whole new world in composition!

So what are you working on right now?
Current work? I was going to go on a bit of a hiatus, to be honest. Though, there may be a project coming up with my buddy Adam (DJ Ango) under the name "Super Special Finish." I'll keep you informed?

Do you have a favorite motto?
"Optimism is key!"

Is there anyone you would like to (or have dreamed to) work with? The RZA, for sure. Anthony Green, Omar Rodriguez-Lopez, and Ewun the Gun. That'd be pretty bossome.

Explain, the inception and philosophy of 'Cream Cheese Chillin'': Hahaha. Really? Well, I suppose it's the state in which a person, or a collective group of people, desire to venture forth and accomplish something, but shortly after decide lounging around and conversing would be just as fun. Word.

Also, 'Peptotrippin'.
Peptotrippin' is like robotrippin', but with Pepto Bismol. Its more of a prank to play on someone than anything else.

So who are you listening to right now that you can't get off repeat? Brookes Brothers, "F Zero" in particular.

In the future, where do you see yourself and the progression of your music?
To be frank, I see myself making groovy music for groovy people. :]
