Cyber girl with out a face.....no not like that....

“I…I…I’m an alien from outer space!” This line has been stuck in my head for about a week thanks to Miss Janelle Monae. Dubbed by Art Noveau as an artist you’ll know in 2008, Janelle Monae has something many so-called artists don’t have: she appeals to a variety people from dedicated hip hop heads to techno freaks. This appeal has given her almost a cult following with about 27104 Myspace friends and 1,216 Facebook friends. But web surfers aren’t the only ones intrigued by her, hip hop superstars Outkast had also taken notice. She was in their Morris Brown music video, she was featured on the Idlewild soundtrack (Lettin Go) and she worked with Big Boi’s Purple Ribbon All-Stars. But Janelle Monae isn’t just a pretty face in a music video or and feature on someone else’s album and her album Metropolis: The Chase proves that to me and anyone else who listens. Metropolis, one out a series of four albums or “suites”, is a riveting combination of mix of soul and jazz influences as well as a futuristic aura that will appeal to even the most eccentric music listener. Although the album only has four songs and an intro, it is better than most albums I have heard that have 15 or more tracks. Her first single, Violet Stars Happy Hunting! Is a fast paced little diddy that stays true to the album’s futuristic theme but it also has a soulful, vintage feel to it. Her other songs don’t disappoint me either, but I will leave that to you to decide. Check out the video below of her performing a rocked our version of Violet Stars Happy Hunting!.
