It’s true: the new “Star Trek” prequel movie is really,
really good. “The spirit of adventure and embrace of
rationality that define the show are in full swing,” writes
Manohla Dargis, “as are the chicks in minis and kicky
boots.” The J.J. Abrams remake has big-budget action and
effects, and a story with “emotional and dramatic force as
well some generous laughs,” thanks largely to the newcomers
playing Spock and Kirk. “Steering clear of outright
imitation,” Ms. Dargis writes, “the two young actors
instead distill the characters to capture their essence,
their Kirk-ness and Spock-ness.” Go see for yourself before
the inevitable SNL parody.

Star Trek Trailer Hits

Over the last decade, computer animation has exploded. However, aside from the Star Wars prequels (which used CGI brilliantly), almost no major science fiction films have been released in the last few years, likely because the trend right now is towards comic books instead of sci-fi.

That may change with Star Trek, the new trailer of which looks absolutely gorgeous. The battle scenes remind me of the exquisite battle scenes at the beginning of Revenge of the Sith. Zachary Quinto looks great as Spock. With J.J. Abrams of Lost fame directing, there is all the reason in the world to have high hopes for Star Trek.
