No One on the Corner
...can rock it like M.I.A. Most blogs and fashion sites are dogging her red carpet get up but I think she looks beautiful and fun.
The girl performed ON HER DUE DATE with Lil' Wayne, T.I., Jay-Z, and Kanye in "Swagga Like Us" at the Grammys. I don't know how she did it. Miss Maya is wild.
Zulema's Revelations
Remember Zulema Griffin who was portrayed as the “bitchy black chick” of season two’s Project Runway? The designer would tell you that she was simply “misrepresented” on the overly dramatic (but undeniably addictive) show. I mean, between Andre’s frequent breakdowns and Santino’s many impersonations of Tim Gunn, Zulema’s fabricated bitchiness is hardly remembered these days.
Zulema's designs speak for themselves and “subtle” is definitely not in her fashion vocab. At least not this fall. It’s not surprising to see bright whites in the designer’s fall line. But it may seem a bit unconventional in the fashion world for a designer to feature white garments for a season that has always normally accepted dark browns, blacks, and navies as the go-to hues during the chilly season.
In an interview with Cocoachic, Zulema stresses the importance of having your own style. “I believe strongly that when choosing clothing there are no fashion rules. Wear white shoes in winter if you choose. Be honest with yourself and your body. Does this work for me? Although everything on the runways this year is black, brown, muddied colors, if you like pink, go out and get a pink suit. It's all about individualism.”
With that said, the following church-inspired video features three women in body stockings strutting about in New York to Talib Kweli’s “Hostile Gospel.”
Zulema truly is an individual.

Inspired by the Motherland: 21MC
21MC is making itself known in the world of urban fashion. The line, created by designers Emeka Alams and Yego Morovia, has fused ethnic and tropical prints inspired by the beauty and culture of the African diaspora into the underground street wear culture. The San Francisco-based 21MC (short for 21st Century Maroon Colony) has been gaining much praise from fly kids/hipsters/artists like M.I.A., DJ Diplo, and Afrikan Boy to name a few. Not to mention, the line has been getting lots of attention from magazines and popular style/gossip blogs like TRACE, XLR8R, and Concreteloop.
The unique line describes its purpose in the mission statement,
“Live from Afro-Triangle, our purpose is to provide Tropical Wear garments to the urban Maroon Colonies of the 21st century. The patterns, rhythms, textures, and colors of Africa and Her diaspora, passed on to us by our ancestors, inform the way we create our collections and the way we wear ourselves on the streets” (21maroons.com).
It's imperative that I get this mini poncho.
